So here we kick things off with the primordial number ”0”, and just like it’s negative connotations in the English language, it does indeed represent nothing, nothingness, absence, lack and emptiness; however, in the sphere of the natural universe, I see it as something that isn’t necessarily negative or positive, but rather as something that simply “is”: the neutral essence of something that remains after all the substance of a particular thing has been swept away; for example, consider the lingering scent of flowers in a perfume bottle after the actual flowers have been sacrificed and ground down.
In fact, in my mind, the number zero can be likened to the easy, relaxed neutral gear of a manual transmission car, which is in a position to easily and quickly be moved to the desired gear, but while in neutral, it’s totally passive, relaxed, detached, disengaged and devoid of any tension or strain on the transmission whatsoever. Likewise, the number 0 can be thought of as possessing the same passive, disengaged, and impartial versatility of the neutral gear; just as you can quickly move from “neutral” to “gear 1” or “gear 3” for example, you can just as easily integrate the potential power of the “0” to any particular number to enhance or magnify its qualities. Perhaps a person representing the qualities of the number 0 would make an excellent judge, due to that “uninvolved”, “disengaged” and “impartial witness” type quality. And speaking of the word “witness”, notice how the 0 represents an eye, which can mean not only the eye of an impartial witness or spectator, but also the calm and serene eye of a violent hurricane, which reinforces to us the power of meditative calmness to be able to properly assess and “see” the solution to a problem in the midst of the “hurricanes” of life. How’s that for philosophical metaphors that I just made on the spot?
Furthermore, I like to think that such a formless, empty and neutral energy is analogous to outer space and the cosmos, where you have an empty, dark, quiet, seemingly infinite vacuum; yet, from this empty vacuum of nothingness, life has likely sprung forth through the Big Bang, with the successive steps leading to the formation of stars and organic matter to form planets orbiting such stars and so on. So, in this vein, “0” can be thought of as a giant womb of creation, that pregnant nothingness that leads to the generation of “something-ness” and life as we know it. Therefore, you could say that “0” has an infinite pool of raw potential power to it, which may be harnessed in any direction to be utilized. To illustrate, let’s compare the “0” to nuclear energy as an example, where the generation of low-cost and low pollution nuclear power at a nuclear power plant provides electricity to a community; or on the other hand, a much more destructive use of that same nuclear energy can occur, which I really don’t think I need to explain in any detail.
Of course, if we relate all this to spiritual philosophy, one could argue that as long as we identify with external, material and worldly objects and titles, we are mis-identified with a false, or at least minuscule, sense of who we truly are; for instance, a job title, a political affiliation, a national identity, a racial group, one’s gender etc., which is often referred to as the “ego”. However, if we adopted an ancient yogi’s approach to becoming “nothing”, in the sense of totally throwing off, surrendering and demolishing our false, worldly “ego” identities, then what remains afterwards is our true, untouched spiritual identity; such an identity is considered to be part and parcel of a collective, universal spiritual essence according to many cultures, religions and philosophies. So then, the number zero could effectively represent this universal spiritual essence. This would totally make sense and tie into the whole neutrality idea, as “The Universe” (in a spiritual sense) can be thought of as the ultimate neutral gear, in the sense that being “universal”, this spiritual essence cannot and will not “prefer” a particular “gear” of action, or thought, or way of living, or culture, but rather encompasses them all with equal neutrality and versatility and can readily enter into and express itself through any one of these “gears” of humanity, if these comparisons are on point.
Alternately, the “0” can also represent exactly what its physical shape suggests: a closed circular or ovoid loop, where the line connects back upon itself. So this can then signify a myriad of things: completion, things coming back full circle, or a return of the consequences of one’s actions likened to those comics where a person is sitting with a set of dominoes that are arranged in a circle, so that once one the first one is tipped, the rest are toppled over with the last one falling into the same person’s lap, being symbolic of the result of one’s actions returning back full-circle to them eventually. But aside from that, this circular shape conveys a sense of infinite movement and conservation of energy and momentum, as by continuously feeding back upon itself, the zero becomes a potentially infinitely self sustaining entity. As humans, we have unknowingly drawn upon the qualities of this number to generate the wheel, which is the closest we can get to an infinitely and smoothly rotating shape which would ideally totally conserve all angular momentum and kinetic energy of the rotating tires of our vehicles to achieve perpetual motion, if it were not for the force of friction causing the dissipation of that kinetic energy via heat. But, in an esoteric sense, we could argue that the alluded to “collective universal identity” or “universal consciousness” is perfectly self sustaining, economical and infinite in its quality, as it continuously loops back upon and meets itself totally, so that no “energy” is lost in the process of its movement, allowing it to go on forever in its immortal and endless expression in “spiritual perpetual motion.”
Frequently seeing this number then could symbolize an opportunity or something with great untapped potential, such as a literal or figurative goldmine, as the addition of zeroes at the end of digits obviously multiplies their magnitude many-fold. Alternatively, it may also symbolize the completion of cycles or situations (along with the number 9 in traditional numerology) and things coming full circle or about to. It may also symbolize a need to pause, rest and reflect, or even a call to simply be here in this present moment of life right now as a detached and neutral observer to watch your own life like a movie for a few moments. Things that are hidden, whether negative: like repressed, subconscious traumatic memories, or positive: such as a hidden goldmine, can also be represented by this number as I do see 0 as an elusive number, as the title of this post suggests. Lastly, it could very well indicate something negative, perhaps a reminder that here is a lack or inadequacy of something in an area of a person’s life that needs to be worked upon, or even a warning that one’s current thought process or actions may lead to the loss of something in one’s life; this is illustrated by the opposite example as above, where adding zeroes to the leading end of digits greatly reduces the magnitude of those digits manifold; and obviously, having only a zero (or zeroes) by itself may cause a person to think about or feel the sheer absence of something or someone.
